We Buy Surplus Medium and High-Voltage Cable in Ohio

Medium-voltage cable is a different kind of purchase. The reels are heavy, the insulation is measured in mils, and the shield construction decides who can use the cable. We buy surplus 5kV through 35kV cable, 69kV and above when it turns up, and URD primary cable across Ohio. Start with the reel tag and the jacket print.

Voltage Class and Insulation

Medium-voltage cable is rated by class: 5kV, 8kV, 15kV, 25kV and 35kV. Above that comes 69kV and higher, which is transmission class. Most industrial distribution in Ohio sits at 15kV, with 5kV in older plants and 25kV or 35kV where a higher distribution voltage is in use.

Two insulations dominate. EPR is ethylene propylene rubber, a thermoset with good flexibility and moisture tolerance. XLPE is cross-linked polyethylene, which carries a higher temperature rating and is the more common of the two. Both appear at a 100 percent or 133 percent insulation level, and 15kV cable is 175 mils at 100 percent and 220 mils at 133 percent. The thickness is printed on the tag.

Shields, Tape and Concentric Neutrals

Cable at these voltages is shielded. A semiconductive conductor shield sits over the strands, insulation covers it, and a semiconductive insulation shield sits over the insulation. The metallic shield is where the constructions divide.

A tape shield is copper tape applied helically with an overlap. A wire shield is a serve of copper wires, usually with a counter-spiral tape and drain wires for grounding. Distribution cable adds a concentric neutral: bare copper wires applied helically over the insulation shield, in full or one-third neutral designs. Read the tag for the neutral size, because it limits what the cable can be used for.

URD Primary, Mining Cable and Reel Details

URD primary cable is the underground residential distribution product at these voltages, usually aluminum conductor with a concentric neutral. Mining cable is a separate family: Type W, G-GC and SHD-GC portable power cable, the last two with ground-check conductors, built for repeated flexing and rough handling.

For any medium-voltage lot, send the voltage class, conductor size and material, insulation type and thickness, shield type, neutral size and total footage. Photograph the reel tag, the jacket print and the cable ends. Reel lagging and the original factory tag carry more weight at these voltages than at 600 volts, because the tag is often the only record of the insulation level and the shield. Sealed ends, jacket damage and water in the insulation decide whether a reel is worth pursuing.

This form is routed with the category already noted, so the buyer knows what they are looking at before opening the photos.

Full reels, partial reels, coils and cartons are all reviewed. Condition changes the number, not the eligibility.

Quote Medium & High-Voltage Cable

Tell us what you have and attach photos of the reels, tags and jacket legends. Fields marked * are required.

If the lot is mixed, choose the closest match and list the rest in the description.

Up to 12 photos. JPG, PNG, WEBP or HEIC, 10 MB each. Photos of reel tags and jacket print help most.

Medium & High-Voltage Cable questions

Which voltage classes do you buy?

5kV, 8kV, 15kV, 25kV and 35kV, plus 69kV and above when it turns up. Most medium-voltage inquiries we see are 15kV class cable.

How do I identify the insulation type?

The reel tag or the jacket print usually states EPR or XLPE along with the insulation thickness in mils. If neither is readable, send a photo of the cable end.

Do you buy cable with jacket damage or an exposed shield?

Send photos. Damage near an end is one situation; damage along the run or water inside the insulation is another. We will tell you what we can work with.

Selling medium & high-voltage cable?

Send the wire type, footage, condition and photos of the reels and tags. We review it and come back with pricing and pickup logistics.
